This college magazine cover show a pretty girl in a red top with the title “I love SMU” on it who wears shorts. The girl is standing in a park while behind her a country lane with trees on both sides. At the top of the magazine cover there is a masthead with the title ‘COLLEGE’, plus a lot of other cover lines, such as “smoking salvia” and “she’s 15 and pregnant”.
The front cover contains a date and barcode too. The cover designed in a modern way, we can see it by looking at the masthead, which is coloured red and has a modern font. This use of modern style makes the magazine more attractive for young people who might be interested in reading and exploring about colleges. The background which photographed in a small depth of field is blurry, green and looks like the summer season.
The cover consist a pretty clear mise- en– scene , for example : by reading the title that printed over the girl’s T-shirt we understand that she study at SMU college , and that she likes this college and about to tell good things about it. The girl looks very confident, friendly and relaxed. There is something in her smile that shows us that she is going to reveal in a magazine, what may be less positive. She has a ‘knowing smile’. It seems like she is happy with where she is at and invites you along on that sunny path. Her gaze might suggest leader qualities; she looks very confident and focused in her target. By reading the cover line ‘a new kind of balanced act’ why may think that she is disapproving of the college politics , students’ rights , teenager abilities and so on. She wants to make a change. Her body language suggests she is very comfortable and relaxed at the same time. The girl is photographed in a medium close up, what shows us enough to understand where she is , what she thinks about the college and what does she feel .
The use of space on the cover is nicely balanced and uncluttered. The layout is airy and not too packed, which makes us feel more comfortable with looking at the cover without getting too distracted and confused by too many cover lines or images.
It seems like the magazine has more contents about teenagers’ life, for example; ’15 and pregnant’. The magazine doesn’t talk too much about studies, but it does cover students’ life with its pitfalls. Next to the barcode there is a price tag which says that the magazine is ‘100% free’. This is written in a very small font which is very hard to see. If you want people to pick it up and readit , then show more clearly that it is free . The front cover does not give you a good reason to pick it up; there is no selling point, nor a clear main cover line which serves to attract theattention of its target audience.
The cover lines are coloured blue and black, which are very dark colours and make a contrast with the very bright background. If they were lighter and ‘softer’ colours the cover lines would not stand out. The use of red might appeal the audience’s many different feelings, such as warning, love and action. In this case, the red makes us warm, like you are home. The red colour also makes a contrast with the green background. This works very well
The target audience consists of young people or everyone else who is interested in college life. The magazine might advertise the college services and facilities without being official channel of the university’s management. It is a magazine by young people – for young people.
The college magazine front cover looks very sporty and fun and informal. The values it represents are fun and action and possibly a healthy life style. Personally, when I see that college magazine cover I feel like I want to study in this university. The girl looks very fresh and alive. This university seems to take good care of their students with a lot of consideration for their health, own life and studies. The mise – en- scene of the road and the girl who stands there might suggest that you are “welcome” and you are invited to travel along the road of study and fun.
In my opinion it is made by students without using too much technical expensive software, which looks very nice and not too pretentious. It has a clear focus, good quality, and it is definitely makes me feel the good level of this university.
